WHO IS THIS EXPERIENCE FOR?

The Discover Freediving Course is an intro to freediving in open water. It is designed for those who want to dip their toes into the world of freediving, without committing to a full certification course.

This freediving experience is specifically designed for first-time freedivers. No apnea, scuba, or spearfishing experience is required. And if you already enjoy snorkelling, this intro course will bring your snorkelling experience to a whole new level.

WHAT IS A TRY FREEDIVING?

A Try Freediving or Discover Freediving is a 1-day introduction to the world of apnea, it’s a fun experience designed to show you what freediving feels like in Malta and Gozo’s calm, clear waters.

You will learn the core concept of freediving that will allow you to gradually and safely freedive to up to 12m. During the theory session, we will provide you with general knowledge about freediving, its disciplines and equipment. You will also learn different techniques of equalization and breathing used to increase the time spent underwater.

During the water session, you will practise what has been learned earlier in the day, such as duck diving and kicking techniques to move efficiently underwater as well as breathing and equalization techniques.

WHAT YOU WILL EXPERIENCE

During this freediving introduction, you will feel what it’s like to properly dive on a single breath. Freediving feels calm, weightless, free and deeply immersive. It offers a unique way to experience the ocean.

We know learning to freedive might be intimidating, but the majority of beginners are actually surprised by how relaxed and natural freediving feels.

Our instructors will be with you every step of the way and our training methods can be adapted to everyone's abilities. So, at your own rhythm, you will learn freediving fundamentals such as breathing and breath holding techniques, how to fin and equalize correctly, how to be safe while having fun.

You won't be snorkelling, skin diving or spearfishing the same way anymore! Your confidence will increase and you will be able to spend more time under water to enjoy the sea life in a relaxed manner.

If your Discover Freediving experience leaves you wanting more, know that you can use this intro session as your first step into certified freediving training. The Freediver Course is the perfect progression since it builds directly on the skills you learned during the try freediving session to potentially take you to –20 m and give you a recognised freediving certification in just one more day.

  Ich habe bei ApneaTotal meinen Advanced Freediver Kurs gemacht und würde es auf der Stelle wieder hier tun! Meine Instruktorin Reggie war stets bemüht, dass ich mich wohl und sicher fühle. Sie war die ganze Zeit so aufmerksam und hat mir dabei so viele Tipps gegeben, wie ich gewisse Dinge verbessern kann. Außerdem war alles total flexibel und unkompliziert, gleichzeitig hab ich mir so viel von diesem Kurs mitgenommen und so schöne Tauchsessions gehabt. Ich kann ApneaTotal jedem empfehlen, der auf Malta nach einer guten Freediving Schule sucht!

  Arturo The Man! Incredible last minute organisation of an Advanced Freediver Course for me after my planned school had to cancel last minute. With a few key tips and new pointers I was able to absolutely smash my expectations of what I was capable of before the course. Seems to have great intuition for when to encourage students to push limits and when to slow things down a bit, all with safety as the key priority. Had some equalisation issues on one of my deep diving days so Arturo was patient, kind but firm that it wasn’t the day to push it and bent over backwards to rearrange for another day on my short trip and make sure I could complete my course before leaving Malta. Can’t recommend his coaching enough. Apnea Total also an interesting different association to try out if you have previous experience with a different one (I crossed over from AIDA 2)

  Great experience overall. Went spearfishing for 2 days in a row and I got tons of useful tips on how to approach fish, how to handle the gun etc. Mediterranean is no joke so really need to be on point with the technique. Saw some cool spots as well! Thanks!

  이집트에서 아이다2따고 처음하는 프리다이빙이어서 조금 긴장된 상태로 펀다이빙을 나갔는데 Reggie강사님의 긍정적이고 밝은 에너지 덕분에 금방 긴장이 풀릴수 있었습니다. 제 컨디션과 실력에 맞추어 다이빙 깊이나 코스(동굴 통과 등)를 그때그때 바꿔주셔서 더욱 재밌게 다이빙을 즐길 수 있었던 것 같습니다. 물 밖으로 나왔을때 걷기도 힘들 정도로 지쳤지만 얼굴은 웃는 얼굴로 나왔습니다. 몰타 프리다이빙 찾고계시면 강력하게 추천드립니다

  I came for the free diving discovery day and then extended it to the full course because I liked it so much and felt so well taken care of.

Reggie is a superb instructor, both in theory as in practical sessions. Absolutely professional and safe at every step.

  Wir hatten nur einen Tag Zeit und haben uns deshalb für den Discover Course entschieden. Rückblickend die richtige Entscheidung: Der Vormittag bestand aus Theorie und Einweisung, sodass wir die Grundlagen und die Sicherheitsaspekte verstanden hatten, bevor es überhaupt ins Wasser ging. Am Nachmittag folgte die Praxiseinheit in herrlich blauem, klarem Wasser, und wir konnten das Gelernte tatsächlich umgehend und erfolgreich umsetzen.

Dazu trägt vor allem Arturo bei. Mit seiner persönlichen und zugleich professionellen Art motiviert er, nimmt sich Zeit und vermittelt ein Gefühl von Sicherheit und Vertrauen, das bei diesem Vorhaben viel wert ist. Dazu kommt seine lockere, humorvolle Seite, die einem die Anspannung nimmt und dafür sorgt, dass man mit Spaß bei der Sache bleibt. Da die Gruppe klein bleibt, kann er auf jeden Einzelnen individuell eingehen, und wer Spanisch spricht, merkt schnell, wie sehr er sich freut, auch mal auf Spanisch zu erklären.

Für alle mit knappem Zeitbudget, die Freediving ernsthaft ausprobieren wollen: klare Empfehlung. Wir bleiben auf jeden Fall dran und kommen dafür gerne noch einmal nach Gozo zu Apnea Total Malta, so gut hat es uns gefallen.

  I had an amazing time doing the introductory spearfishing course and freediving coaching sessions. Safety was the first priority which felt very nice, especially with the spearfishing. FAQ Discover Freediving Course

Can I freedive? Do I need experience or skills?

Yes, you can freedive. We strongly believe everyone can be a free diver. Our body is meant to freedive but our mind at times leads us to presume the contrary. You will be able to free dive once we give you the necessary tools.

No experience is needed. This Discover Freediving session is designed specifically for complete beginners who want to try freediving for the first time in a safe and guided environment.

The only real requirement is basic swimming ability. One of the most common fears is not being able to hold your breath, but you’ll be surprised by how much you can achieve with proper guidance.

Is freediving dangerous?

Like any other sport, free diving can be risky if not practiced correctly. Recreational freediving is not an extreme sport but a proper freediving training is nonetheless recommended.

Free diving is not only about holding your breath underwater, a specific dive training must be followed to avoid hyperventilation and shallow water blackout. Freediving with a dive buddy is a must but the best will be for both freedivers to be trained by a qualified instructor.

What is the difference between Discover Freediving and a full course?

Discover Freediving is a 1-day introduction to freediving. It is a first experience, a try session.

A full freediving course goes deeper into theory, technique, and progression, and can lead to an official certification.

The Discover Freediving Course can be enjoyed as a standalone activity, or it can count as the first day of our 2‑day Freediver Course, with certification awarded if you successfully complete the second day.

Prerequisites for the DFD

How long is the course? When does it start? What is included?

A day is enough to discover freediving.

We do not have a definite planning and prefer to work on a first come first served basis. Let us know when you would like to free dive and we will do our best to match your schedule.

Our freediving courses include: transportation, gear, water and snacks. Freedivers need a low volume mask, a snorkel, long fins, a wetsuit may also be required, depending on the season and comfort. We will also send you pictures and videos of your in-water practices so that you can share your underwater adventures with your friends and family.
