Discover Spearfishing

Our Discover Spearfishing Course caters to certified freedivers (or those who have completed a Discover Freediving course) interested in experiencing spearfishing for the first time or starting their spearfishing journey off on the right foot.

This introductory course is also for new underwater hunters or spearfishers with limited experience looking to expand their spearfishing knowledge and improve their underwater technique under expert guidance.

The Discover Spearfishing is the perfect Spearfishing taster: comprehensive yet easy to learn format combined with a practical water session. We will provide you with the skills necessary to be a safe and successful spearo.

During this course we will introduce you to the best and safest spearfishing practices: spearfishing safety, which includes how to safely interact with your spearfisher buddy in different fishing scenarios, spearfishing ethics, underwater hunting techniques, and catch management.

Safe gun operation being essential, we will focus on speargun handling and accuracy: how to safely carry, handle, load and shoot. Every shot is purposeful as we maintain the sustainable and selective nature of Spearfishing. We will only be shooting fish of legal size that we intend to eat. The instructor will teach you how to identify the different species of fish found in the Mediterranean, how to approach them as a silent hunter, how to lure, ambush and catch your prey based on their behaviour and the terrain.

The instructor is an experienced freediver and spearfisher, and he has many tricks up his sleeve!

The Discover Spearfishing Course starts with a theory session where you will learn the basics of Spearfishing. For instance, we will explain what fishing under water with a speargun entails, and how to be efficient and safe. We will introduce you to sustainable spearfishing for a respectful harvest from the sea, as well as the different fish found in the Mediterranean and their behaviour.

The Instructor will choose the best fishing spot based on sea conditions and depth where you will feel comfortable and safe. Once on site, the instructor will fully brief you on the location and what to expect. We will then gear up and get ready for a fun-filled adventure for aquatic hunters.

Once at sea we will practice basic skills such as duck diving with a spear gun, streamlining, speargun awareness, etc. We will also practice shooting to get familiar with the Spearfishing equipment. When we are ready, we will plan our fishing strategy: route to follow, access points, fish sizing, how to remain as stealthy as possible, the best fish approach and how to close distance with the target, take the shot before the fish senses you, etc.

The instructor will always be by your side to show you how to act step-by-step, and give you guidance on how to dive at any given time and on the technique to use based on your surroundings and the species you are targeting. He will also correct your mistakes to improve your spearfishing and foraging skills and increase your chances of catching a fish. After a few hours of fishing and practicing various techniques, we will return to the shore, dry off and have some snacks and drinks to recover the energy spent during the day. 

To wrap up the Discover Spearfishing Course, the instructor will review the open water session and provide tips for continued progress.
