Spearfishing Courses

What is Spearfishing?

As the name suggests, spearfishing is fishing with a spear. Many ancient civilizations used this fishing method, as illustrated in the drawings on cave walls or tombs and as referenced in texts. This type of fishing has evolved over time. Nowadays, you can practice spearfishing while snorkeling, scuba diving, or freediving with a speargun, a pole, or a sling.

Although spearfishing is known across the world and is practiced (almost) everywhere, the act of spearfishing in itself varies depending on where you are. Spearfishing regulations may differ from one place to the other, fish are also different, and so is the spearfishing equipment and techniques used. The speargun, for instance, is unique in design to respond to the underwater terrain or the type of fish hunted.

Spearfishing responds to a basic human survival instinct, and awakening those instincts makes spearfishing one of the most addictive and rewarding freediving experiences there are. Spearfishing is also considered an ethical and environmentally friendly method of fishing if practiced correctly.

What is Sustainable Fishing?

Spearfishing is the most selective type of fishing. Contrary to other fishing practices, there is no by-catch in spearfishing as you can target specifically the fish you want to catch. In Apnea Total Malta we promote Sustainable Spearfishing as we think that being a spearfisherman implies (or should imply) to be responsible and follow the following guidelines:

  • Only hunt the quantity of fish you will consume on the day
  • Catch fish that has a proper size (some of the legal sizes are ridiculously small)
  • Try not to target large females as they lay thousands of eggs every season, even though is not always easy to identify them.
  • Do not hunt protected/endangered species
  • Treat your catches with respect, and don't let them suffer unnecessarily
  • Respect the marine ecosystems, habitats, and protected areas
  • Follow the Fishing bans and regulations applicable

Our Spearfishing Courses

We offer two one-day spearfishing courses depending on the level of knowledge and experience in spearfishing. Both courses are aimed at certified freedivers. If you do not have a freediving certification, you can take a freediving course before the spearfishing course.

Why do I need to be a certified freediver to spearfish with you?

Freediving and spearfishing are intertwined. If you want to spearfish, you first need to learn to free dive. A freediving course will bring you the basics you need to dive underwater comfortably and safely.

If you are an experienced spearo, you might think a freediving course won’t bring you anything. This is a mistake. Self-taught freediver/spearfisher, though able to reach a certain depth, often make mistakes that can cost them efficiency and bottom time in best cases or can be dangerous in worst cases.

A freediving course will give you the knowledge, techniques, skills, and confidence to be a good/better spearfisher.

During a freediving course, you will learn:

  • How to relax and breath before and after the dives: safer and longer hunting sessions, with more bottom time and less energy consumed
  • How to move efficiently: with the proper technique, you will break through the column of water without sounds and with fewer vibrations; your movements will be smoother and hydrodynamic making it easier to approach the fish and helping to consume less energy and oxygen
  • New equalization techniques: to reach greater depth, save energy, make less sounds underwater and get closer to the prey
  • Buoyancy: learning how to use the right amount of weights is an essential safety measure. Many spearos carry more weight than necessary as it is easier to descend, forgetting that ascending is the most demanding part of the dive. You should always adjust the weight you carry according on the depth and type of fishing you practice.
  • Safety procedures: efficient buddying protocols, rescue scenarios, first aid kit, spearfishing hazards, and how to prevent them, etc.
  • Self-awareness: better control of your mind and body, understanding of your limits and how to gently push them
  • Underwater confidence: mastering the freediving techniques will make you more relax which will increase the time and quality of your dives
  • Improvement: correct bad habits, be more knowledgeable regarding lung capacity, equalization, breath-hold, and depth, and more competent with greater flexibility of muscles, diaphragm, lungs, ribcage, ears, etc.
